Seven Plant-Based Foods That Are Great For Your Dogs

Increasingly, studies have shown that plant-based diets may be the best option not only when it comes to the long-term health of our bodies, but also in the case of reducing our carbon footprint on the planet. Hence, many people have adopted this lifestyle, or have at least incorporated more produce into their diets. With many of these individuals being dog-guardians, it is surprising that the “acceptable” scraps or treats given to these pets are still often limited to meats, poultry, and dairy. Did you know that you can share many of your favorite healthy plant-based snacks with your companion, with both of you reaping their life-changing benefits? If eaten in moderation, washed to remove any pesticides or contaminants, along with being cut into small pieces to prevent choking, you will find that your omnivorous buddy will enjoy these snacks tremendously along with you!

1. APPLES

An apple a day keeps the doctor away, right? Well, the same is true for your dog, except that he or she will not need a full apple, and you should still visit the vet regularly… But, hopefully you get our point! Apples are not only a great source of vitamins A, C, and fiber, but their crisp and crunchy texture can also cleanse your dog’s teeth by helping to remove any plaque build-up. When serving apples to your pup, just remember to remove the seeds and core as you would for yourself.

2. BANANAS

Bananas are considered one of the most versatile and easily consumable fruits, especially on the go. This holds true for your canine companion as well, as they are not only enjoyed plain by dogs, but are also used as a key ingredient in many doggy treat recipes. They are high in potassium, biotin, fiber, and copper. Just make sure to peel them, as banana peels may cause choking or intestinal blockage if consumed by your dog.

3. CARROTS

Like most orange fruits and vegetables, carrots contain beta-carotene, which is converted to vitamin A by the body. Vitamin A is crucial for healthy vision, which is why you may have heard of “carrots being good for eyesight”. This, in its entirety, also holds true for your dog! Besides also being high in fiber, which aids in digestion, these root vegetables have a crunchy texture, and like apples, provide your dog’s teeth with the added bonus of a gentle cleaning.

4. CUCUMBERS

Since 96% of the composition of a cucumber consists of water, it is therefore extremely low in calories compared to many other dog treats. This makes cucumbers a perfect snack for overweight dogs. Moreover, they pack quite a punch with their nutritional content, containing

vitamins K, C, and B1, while also providing copper, potassium, magnesium, and biotin. Just in case you thought that there couldn’t be a better snack for your dog, cucumbers also help to eliminate bad breath in our canine friends!

5. PEANUT BUTTER

Loaded with nutrients, healthy fats, and protein, peanut butter is the definition of an ideal snack. Besides being absolutely irresistible to your pooch, this spread contains vitamins E and B, which help to keep your pup’s skin healthy and his coat lustrous. However, it is important to check the label before presenting peanut butter to your dog, as some brands may contain xylitol (which is toxic), added sugar, or added salt, both of which are unhealthy for your pet.

6. STRAWBERRIES

For many, a basket full of this sweet and tart berry is the symbol of spring. Besides being rich in fiber and vitamin C, strawberries contain a chemical component known as malic acid, that, upon contact with your dog’s teeth while chewing, can help to whiten them!

7.WATERMELON

Just like strawberries are the fruit representative of spring for many, watermelon holds the same place in summer. Because it is mostly made up of water, watermelon can provide some much needed hydration for your pup on sweltering summer days. Watermelon is also rich in fiber and antioxidants. Before serving to your dog, just make sure to remove the rind and seeds, as these parts can easily cause intestinal blockage.
